Here are the top questions discussed in our Live Open Hour Episode#39 session, which was streamed live on 26th August 2022. Our expert Saket Bansal discussed many queries asked by Participants regarding the right certification/training for professional growth.
Question: Is it mandatory to do Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) before doing Advanced CSPO?
Question: I have worked as Project Manager and Scrum Master and aspiring to be Product Owner/Manager. Should I opt for Leading SAFe or I can directly go for SAFe POPM?
Saket: Product Management is a subject, and being a Product Manager requires understanding customer needs. You need skills like business requirements analysis, facilitation, customer empathy mapping, and analytical skills and coming up with a solution. You may already know about Product Management based on your experience as a Project Manager. If not, try to learn it by engaging yourself in business analysis, sales, pre-sales and other product management activities. After that, you can map that knowledge in an Agile context with the help of Agile Product Management programs.
SAFe POPM will teach you how to do Product management in SAFe space. So, if you want to be a Product Manager in SAFe space, I recommend SAFe POPM. And if you want to be a Product Manager in the Scrum , then I recommend Scrum CSPO. Because Scrum CSPO will teach you how to do Product management in a Scrum context, both programs will focus 50% towards Product Management, and the rest will be on the framework. So, you can choose any of these programs based on your aspirations.
Question: I am a certified SAFe Advanced Scrum Master. What would be the next best career option and certification?
Saket: Your first essential certification is gaining experience and knowledge of SAFe. Because doing certification without any relevant experience will not add much weight to your profile. Work in SAFe space for 1-2 years to learn how to do effective facilitation, Program Increment Planning and help your agile release train. After gaining some experience in SAFe, you can find the next certification required based on your career aspirations. For example, suppose you aspire to Release Train Engineer role; then you can do SAFe RTE certification.
Question: Question: Is it mandatory to do Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) before doing Advanced CSPO?
Saket: Each certification companies have their own rules and processes. If you are doing from Scrum Alliance, they ask for CSPO certification to finally qualify as Advanced CSPO. You can do training program for Advanced CSPO without CSPO but awarding of the certification will be only after you do with CSPO.
Question: Question: I am working in a service-based industry and my interest area is Product Management and I have requested for transition to Business Analyst Role. Can you suggest me some certifications which will help me in smooth transition?
Saket: There are 2 popular certifications for business analyst role-
Both these certifications talk about requirements elicitation techniques and various way to prioritize/manage requirements.
We run PMI-PBA program for PMI-PBA certificate exam preparation. In that program we cover the topics like User personas, how to design interview questions, how to conduct various group/ brainstorming sessions, requirements elicitation techniques, and various way to prioritize/manage requirements and other topics required for the exam.
After Business Analysis certification you can do CSPO certification. In CSPO with few topics common from Business Analysis certification they will focus on Product Backlog and Product Prioritization.
So, my recommendation would PMI-PBA by PMI and after that CSPO certifications. These 2 certifications will make you ready for Business Analyst role.
Question: I work in a UK firm and there we follow Kanban way of working. I can see there are 2 Kanban programs on your website. Can you please suggest which one will be suitable for me?
Saket: We follow Kanban university program and there we have 2 Kanban Management Professional programs that is KMP1 and KMP2.
• KMP1 familiarize you with the theories, principles, and practices of Kanban Methodology.
• KMP2 give you the understanding of Kanban System at advance level and its best practices
I suggest you start with KMP1 program. It will be a good starting point for you to learn about Kanban.
