PMP Exam Prep Q #1 – Managing Scope – Product Backlog

Q1. Which of the following best defines the Product Backlog?
A. Product Backlog is a collection of User Stories.
B. Product Backlog contains the project scope.
C. Product Backlog is a baselined requirement document.
D. Product Backlog contains prioritized requirements.

The correct answer is D

The Product Backlog is a prioritized list of all the requirements required to develop or improve the Product. In Agile, we do incremental exploration of requirements, which are listed in the Product Backlog in a prioritized manner, manner, reflecting Product Backlog management best practices.

Typically product requirements are expressed in user stories in a Product Backlog, but it is not mandatory. You can also use other tools, so using User Story is not a must. Many assume that there must be user stories in the product backlog, but in Agile, a user story is only one of the tools for exploring requirements, and each Backlog item brings its unique value.

Also, apart from user stories (small size requirements), Product Backlog can contain other things, like:

  • Large-size Requirements are typically known as Epics
  • Issues to be resolved
  • Technical work,
  • Knowledge needs for the team, and
  • Other research work related to product development.

Each of the above items describes requirements that the project team needs to fulfil user wants related to the Product, adding to the Product Backlog value.

A Backlog Template can be very useful in maintaining the structure and ensuring the Product backlog size is manageable. Through Product backlog refinement, teams can ensure that the most important tasks are clearly defined and ready for work in upcoming sprints.

Option A – “ Product Backlog is a collection of User Stories – The Product Backlog contains user stories. Still, it can have other things like epics, issues to be resolved, knowledge acquisition, technical work, and other research related to product development.

This could be marked as the right option in the absence of option D.

Option B – Product Backlog contains the project scope – Product Backlog is the prioritized list of requirements; it does not describe the project scope. The scope is a solution part of the Product where we are thinking of “How are we going to meet the requirement”. Product Backlog includes “WHAT” of user’s requirements, not HOW we will meet those requirements.

Option C – Product Backlog is a baselined requirement document – Product Backlog is an emergent, ordered list of product requirements. Product Backlog is a Living requirement document, and it is never baselined.
